Having the ability to see every Super Bowl from 1-50, number pairs by Quarter and Conference will provide you with the information to quickly determine the possibility you have of winning a quarter. Depending upon the 10 x 10 pool you are playing, where only 4 quarters are paid, you hope when the numbers are randomly drawn, your pair fall into one of those 60 AFC vs. NFC combinations not highlighted in red.
Below are all Super Bowls 1-50 and the number pair broken down by Quarter and Conference, so you can see how frequently number combinations have occurred in the past. The 40 red boxes have never won a quarter.
Safeties, blocked extra points, 2 point conversions, and moving the extra point from 20 yards to 33 yards can all impact the value of your numbers. Now there is hope for what were historically low probability number pairs.
1st Quarter – there were only 16 winning number combinations and AFC 0 vs. NFC 0 had the most wins followed closely by AFC 0 vs. NFC 3.
2nd Quarter – as you can see in this quarter, the number combinations nearly doubled. AFC 7 vs. NFC 0 had the most wins followed by AFC 7 vs. NFC 3. After that are random combinations of 1 and 2 wins in 29 other pairs, thus providing other winners as the game takes shape.
3rd Quarter – consistent with the winning number pair combinations exceeding 30 and easily doubling the 1st quarter. AFC 4 vs. NFC 0 had the most wins, followed by AFC 7 vs. NFC 0, AFC 7 vs. NFC 3 and AFC 7 vs. NFC 6. Having the AFC with 7 in the 3rd quarter was the number with the highest probability of winning.
4th Quarter – follows the pattern of the 2nd & 3rd quarters with the winning number pair combinations exceeding 30. The 4th has the most combinations of numbers as end of the game strategy and other decisions as well as scoring plays in the previous quarters impact the combination possibilities. AFC 4 vs. NFC 7 had the most wins, followed by a number of pairs which hit twice. Having the NFC with 7 in the 4th quarter was the number with the highest probability of winning and 7 of 10 pairs with AFC were winners.
Total – Overall there are 60 winning number pairs for all Super Bowls 1-50 by Quarter and Conference. This leaves 40 pairs, which have yet to win and some have a small or no probability of occurring. There are many factors which make it very difficult for certain number pairs to ever win and with the extra point being moved back 13 yards, could bring those less common numbers into play.
First time number pairs:
- Super Bowl 46: NFC 5 & AFC 7 win a quarter for the first time. Thanks to Tom Brady getting a safety very early in the 1st quarter after being pressured by Justin Tuck.
- Super Bowl 47: AFC 8 & NFC 3 win a quarter for the first time in the 3rd quarter.
- Super Bowl 48: AFC 8 & NFC 6 win a quarter for the first time in the 3rd quarter.
- Super Bowl 49: AFC 4 & NFC 4 won both the 2nd & 3rd quarters, which is statistically impressive since that combination only hit 1 other time in 48 Super Bowls.
- Super Bowl 50: AFC 8 & NFC 3 win a quarter for the first time in the 4th quarter.
Super Bowl Quarter Metrics
Number pairs which haven’t won a Super Bowl quarter include the following: 1-1, 2-2, 5-5, 8-8 and 9-9.
There are 40 number combinations which have yet to produce a winner.
0-0 has won the most with 15 wins
AFC 7 & NFC 0 ranks 2nd with 12 wins
AFC 4 & NFC 0 and NFC 3 & AFC 0 are both tied for 3rd with 10 wins
Based on the scoring, certain number pairs are more difficult to occur in the 1st quarter and cannot occur until later in the game. This could also be the year where a missed extra point will put statistically, low probability numbers in play.
